Science is the branch of study that seeks to observe, discover and understand the nature and principles that govern the universe, the world and mankind. For the Christian, Science is that branch of observation – search out that discovers, categorizes, utilizes and confirms the divine knowledge woven into the fabric of the universe by a Sovereign, All powerful, All knowing, uncaused cause, uncreated creator – the God whose glory the heaves declare, and the planets confirm his handy work.
Technology plays a central role in the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes, especially in industry, engineering, etc. to invent useful tools or to solve problems. Such could be in the form of a machine, piece of equipment, method, advances in computer, Mass Media and communication. The church is called to use Science and technology in a full and constructive way to the glory of God. In this new normal, technology is a resource the church must use wisely to accomplish the Great Commission. Even in the midst of Covid – 19 lockdowns, churches are using technology to reach their congregation and the people they have been called out to serve.
Science in no way contradicts Christianity, but rather enhances it. Wisdom, power, knowledge and understanding belong to God. Jesus Christ, considered as God and man, the son of God equal with his Father, born of Virgin Mary is “The power of God and the wisdom of God from all eternity. By his words were the heavens made and all the host of them” The use of technology in the church is the new normal, and every congregation and every pastor needs to take advantage of technology in order to enable the church fulfill her purposes here on earth.
Technology keeps members of the church connected, and many more people could be reached at a time. Through Facebook, Twitter or church blog, a pastor can easily communicate directly with his congregation. Virtual church service is becoming the new normal. Even people are not so willing to return to the physical church after the end of Covid -19. Thank God for science and technology.
I also want to thank pastor Lawrence Obisakin for this illuminating writing, shedding more light on the fact that Science, applied science as in technology and the knowledge of the gospel of salvation are the handy work of God. They are of a truth, one coin with two faces. I believe Science and technology are resources that we can use for the glory of God in the church and in the universe at large. There is now a big shift in how we interact in the church, but we have to use it if we want to help our community, for the sake of the mission of the church. Revelation 4:11
